چکیده

Carrier-mediated exchange coupling, known as Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, plays a fundamental role in itinerant ferromagnetism and has great application potentials in spintronics. A recent theorem based on the imaginary-time method shows that the oscillatory RKKY interaction becomes commensurate on bipartite lattice and predicts that the effective exchange coupling is always ferromagnetic for the same sublattice but antiferromagnetic for opposite sublattices. We revisit this important problem by realand imaginary-time methods and find the theorem misses important contributions from zero modes. To illustrate the importance of zero modes, we study the spin susceptibility in graphene nanoribbons numerically. The effective exchange coupling is largest on the edges but does not follow the predictions from the theorem.

Spin-Lattice Order in One-Dimensional Conductors: Beyond the RKKY Effect.

We investigate magnetic order in a lattice of classical spins coupled to an isotropic gas of one-dimensional conduction electrons via local exchange interactions. The frequently discussed Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida effective exchange model for this system predicts that spiral order is always preferred. Here we consider the problem nonperturbatively, and find that such order vanishes above a ...

Indirect Exchange and Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) Interactions in Magnetically-Doped Graphene

Magnetically-doped graphene systems are potential candidates for application in future spintronic devices. A key step is to understand the pairwise interactions between magnetic impurities embedded in graphene that are mediated by the graphene conduction electrons. A large number of studies have been undertaken to investigate the indirect exchange, or RKKY (Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida), inter...

Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction at finite temperature: Graphene and bilayer graphene

We investigate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities in both single layer and Bernal stacked bilayer graphene, finding a number of striking anomalies in the temperature dependence of this interaction. In undoped single layer graphene the strength of the RKKY interaction for substitutional impurities anomalously increases upon increasing temperature, an...

Disordered Kondo nanoclusters: Effect of energy spacing

Exact-diagonalization results for Kondo nanoclusters alloyed with mixed-valence impurities show that tuning the energy spacing D drives the system from the Kondo to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) regime. The interplay of D and disorder gives rise to a D versus concentration T=0 phase diagram very rich in structure. The parity of the total number of electrons alters the competition bet...

Enhanced antiferromagnetic exchange between magnetic impurities in a superconducting host.

It is generally believed that superconductivity only weakly affects the indirect exchange between magnetic impurities. If the distance r between impurities is smaller than the superconducting coherence length (r ≲ ξ), this exchange is thought to be dominated by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions, identical to the those in a normal metallic host. This perception is based on a pert...
